The Burden of Excellence: Kenya Theatre Awards

When we were planning to launch The Kenya Theatre Awards, we knew our objective - and challenge - was to inspire excellence from both our functional promise and visual manifestation.

Objective

Portray ‘excellence in Kenyan theatre’, and sufficiently serve the branding and trophy design needs of a body that seeks to recognise distinct contributions in the theatre arts.

Outcome

A ‘star of the moment’ brand visual with the elegance of an awards night, starring in the branded material, video graphics and ultimately symbolised in the prestigious trophy.
We defined the awards as ‘a celebration of excellence and innovation’, meaning our brand carried the burden of living its claim in all forms of its existence. While our needs were greater than fulfilling the awards ceremony itself, the core of what represents the esteemed Kenya Theatre Awards was always going to speak to the exact moment a winner is declared! When a theatrical star is brought forth! This became the majestic star flying into being, with its flares ensuring the explosiveness of that moment of excellence. From within the star, the outstanding symbol of the craft that is theatre completes the icon, which is presented alongside a smooth typeface with the awards name in full. This brand has become a symbol of success in the Kenyan theatre arts industry, seamlessly standing as an emblem of recognition, appreciation and celebration of the best our rich industry has to offer.
