Addressing The Arts Skill Gap: Pokeza Skills Program
A groundbreaking initiative by BTM Storytellers designed to bridge the theatre acting skill gap in Kenya. By equipping entry-level actors with acting, life, and brand-building skills under the mentorship of seasoned practitioners, the program empowers participants to enhance their employability and impact. As Production Manager, I oversaw recruitment, execution, and program delivery, culminating in a 100% graduation rate and a successful public showcase.
Objective
Oversee the program by leading its conceptualisation, initiation, and execution. This includes providing the necessary tools, techniques, and platforms to facilitate seamless delivery while proactively addressing challenges and ensuring the program’s success.
Outcome
The program successfully graduated 100% of its participants, culminating in a showcase event where students displayed their newfound skills in front of an audience. This success has paved the way for PSP to become an annual program, further cementing its role in developing Kenya’s theatre talent pipeline.
The Pokeza Skills Program (PSP), an initiative by BTM Storytellers, was conceived to address the critical theatre acting skill gap in Kenya, aiming to empower entry-level actors with the competencies needed for employability and value creation. Built on the philosophy of mentorship, "passing on the baton" (Pokeza in Swahili), the program combines acting training with life skills and brand-building, equipping participants to thrive in their craft and personal development.
In my capacity as Production Manager, I led the recruitment and selection of participants, ensuring a diverse cohort of aspiring actors. I facilitated seamless execution by coordinating with trainers, providing tools and technology, and managing program logistics. The curriculum, developed by BTM Storytellers, was delivered by seasoned practitioners who brought real-world expertise to the sessions.
The program concluded with remarkable success, achieving a 100% graduation rate and a vibrant showcase event where participants demonstrated their newly acquired skills. The pilot's success has established PSP as an annual program, solidifying its role in nurturing talent within Kenya’s vibrant theatre community.
